Just two of the many things Willie Nelson is passionate about are golf and running. His passion for golf is well-known, but his interest in running is also keen. The Red Headed Stranger doesn’t run much anymore, but he did for years while on the road to keep his sanity. And he even sponsored the Willie Nelson Run for Farm Aid about 11 years ago.
On June 30th , Willie is combining golf and running at his 1st Annual Willie Nelson Celebrity Golf Tournament and Hit-N-Run to celebrate the re-opening of his Texas Hill Country Golf Course in Spicewood.
The golf (and running) gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday with three Shotgun Willie starts of speed golf , followed by two rounds of six-man (or woman) 9-hole scrambles at 12:30 and 3 p.m. For the uninitiated, the Hit-N-Run speed golf (sponsored by RunTex) consists of playing a round of golf as fast as you can. You must carry three clubs and run or jog between shots. The fastest time combined with the lowest score is the winner.
There will be plenty of golf for those who want to take a traditional slower route. And the full day of golf and fun will finish with a friendly Night Life round in the twilight with special glow-in-the-dark balls.
But as you might have guessed, Willie’s tournament will include a lot more than golf and speed golf. There will be live music all day long from Paula Nelson, Sonny Throckmorton, Folk Uke, Zach Edwards, Billy Joe Shaver and Jamey Johnson.
At 11 a.m., there will be a silent auction (lasting through the day into the night/concerts) with one-of-a-kind items donated from Willie, RunTex, Earl Campbell, Darrell Royal, Capital of Texas Stoneworks, Martha League- Calhoun Gallery and others. After that, comes lunch.
The tournament benefits four Central Texas charities: Pedernales Fire Department, Helping Hands Ministries of Spicewood, The Children’s Music Foundation of Austin and the RunTex Foundation.
