PRESS RELEASE
AUSTIN WOMAN TURNS 100 AND CONTINUES TO WALK UP TO 2 MILES DAILY
Odessa Jackson, who was born on April 5, 1912, has reached the century mark! What is most amazing about this 100 year old Austinite, is that she still walks 1-2 miles daily around the St. John Neighborhood in her Nike shoes and picks up cans for recycling.
She continues to stay involved in the community and attends the St. John Community Center daily, is active as a Deaconess every Sunday at Vision of Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church, and serves as the pillar and sage for her family. One of her favorite songs is “Amazing Grace” and she recognizes God’s grace as she reflects, ”I am very blessed to be alive given that I was born prematurely.” “She is an amazing witness to a life of personal, spiritual and physical wellness” adds her Pastor, Rev. Dr. Mark Washington,
A special community celebration and service in recognition of Sister Odessa Jackson’s birthday and community service will be held Sunday, April 15, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. at Metropolitan AME Church, 1101 E. 10th Street, Austin, Texas 78702. Bishop Gregory Ingram, Presiding Prelate of the 10th Episcopal District of the AME Church will be the guest speaker.
